Outdoor wedding: preparing the rain plan
An outdoor wedding is always prepared in two versions. The rain plan says where each part of the day moves to, who makes the decision and at what time, so that no one has to improvise that very morning.
What to plan for each moment
- The ceremony: a hall, a barn, a marquee, with seating.
- Drinks reception: a covered space big enough for everyone standing.
- Group photos: a porch, a staircase, a sheltered, bright spot.
- Dinner, if outdoors: a tent with sides, and a stable floor.
Who decides, and when
Set a cut-off time, in the morning or the evening before, and a single person to decide, preferably not you. Tell the suppliers about this time: the rental company, florist, caterer and musicians don't set up in the same place depending on the version.
It's not just rain
- Heat: shade, water, fans, and a ceremony not too early in the afternoon.
- Wind: weighted tablecloths, decorations fixed down, a microphone with a windshield.
- Evening chill: blankets, a portable heater.
- Insects at dusk.
Tell the guests
A note on your wedding page is enough: “The ceremony takes place in the park; wear shoes suited to grass.” Your guests will dress accordingly.
