Choosing your reception venue: the points to check
Before booking a venue, check its real seated capacity, the time the music has to stop, which suppliers it requires and what the price includes. Visit it if possible in the season and at the time of day of your wedding.
The real capacity
The stated capacity is often that of a standing cocktail. Ask for the number of people seated at tables, with a dance floor and room for service to pass. Have them show you a room plan laid out for a wedding of your size.
Times and noise
- At what time should the music be turned down, then stop?
- Until what time can we stay?
- When can we set up the day before, and when must everything be cleared away?
- Are there any neighbours?
What the venue requires
Some venues impose their caterer or a list of approved suppliers; others leave you free but charge an access fee. Ask before visiting: it can completely change your budget.
What your caterer will want to know
- Is there a kitchen, or a pantry, and what is in it?
- Is the power supply sufficient?
- Is there a water point and access for a lorry?
- Where are the cold items and dirty dishes stored?
The guests
Parking, wheelchair access, enough toilets, accommodation on site or nearby, a fallback in case of rain. Note the answers during the visit: after three venues, you mix them up.
